Supporting suppliers

Derk van Manen, assures that these companies can rely on the expertise, commitment and service of Duynie. Supporting suppliers of plant-based co-products has been a service whose development over the years happened on the waves of growing sustainability awareness in the agri-food value chain, and increasing technology potential. This allowed for innovative processes to extract valuable components like protein and fibre from plant-based co-products. “Sustainable management of co-products and innovation is the core business”, Derk says. “Like no other, our colleagues have the experience to advice and warn suppliers of co-products when legal requirements or market conditions are changing.”

Certification schemes

Another service area Derk refers to, is advice on certification. “A key certification scheme for feed is GMP+, but many EU-member states also have their own schemes or specifications”, he says. “Our experts support suppliers in complying with these certification schemes as well. This implies that we have to really understand the processes and challenges of our suppliers. Only this allows for fully capitalizing the added value from co-products. Like no other, Duynie is capable of doing just that for suppliers.”

Products and processes

Sudden changes in feed safety legislation due to which co-products coming from potato crops for which farmers have been using specific crop protection means can’t be used for feed anymore. Or new technology to refine regained starch from the French fries and crisps manufacturers at such quality that it qualifies for use as a food ingredient. These are examples of changes in technology and legislation for both existing and new businesses that suppliers need to take into account. “Our service also applies to processes”, says Derk. “Storage and handling of co-products at the suppliers’ premises is subject to strict regulation to protect products from being contaminated.”

Understanding customers

Besides this, Duynie ’s experts are also getting under the skin of customers, whose are also raising the bar by continuously requesting a better sustainability performance. “We need to understand their processes so we can assess the added value of co-products and optimise their use by customers in food, petfood, feed and industrial”, Derk says. “Industrial for example: recovered and modified starch is used as an ingredient in labeling glue. Because we analyse how it is used and what the quality parameters are, we can properly determine the value.”

Coordinating supply and demand

This is what makes Duynie unique, according to Derk. "We fully understand the processes of our suppliers and regularly consult with them about ensuring the safety and compliance of their products and processes. By now also understanding all the processes, product specifications and expectations of customers, we can also provide good advice there and fully coordinate supply and demand.  So all links in the value chain from production of the co-product, via logistics and processing to in the end at the customers we optimise the use of co-products. As such, Duynie really manifests itself as director of a circular agri-food system!"
