Management of Moist Feeds
Many of Duynie’s moist feeds, including brewer’s grains and raw potato chips, are best kept on a clean concrete surface. You can create a temporary bunker in much the same way as you would when ensiling forage. Just line the walls of your clamp with plastic sheeting, tip in the product then pat it down with a bucket to push out any air. Finish by laying more plastic sheeting over the top and weighing it down evenly.
To prevent spoilage, the feed face should be kept to a minimum and the plastic covering checked regularly to stop air from getting in. If you want to dry out the top, you can sprinkle a layer of salt over the product before putting your plastic sheet over to form a protective crust. Any moist feeds that are delivered warm should be left to stand and cool for at least 12 hours before being covered, to stop condensation gathering.

Liquid Feeds and the Duynie Silo Scheme
A Duynie silo is a cost-effective way of storing liquid co-product feeds. You feel the benefit from the start, as there is no upfront installation cost. Our silos are designed to keep the product in top condition and nutritionally stable, with no risk of spoilage throughout the load. They also make pumping straight from tank to mixer easy.
By providing silos, we are helping all sorts of farming systems to enjoy the benefits of highly nutritious liquid feeds. These are proven to boost intake, increase milk yields and drive up daily liveweight gains. You can choose to fill your silo with everything from Loch Lomond gold, Seda syrup and Trafford syrup to potato cream, potato puree and brewer’s yeast.
Citrus Pulp as a Forage & Co-product Cap
An innovative use for a co-product that you may not have considered is capping forage and other clamped co-products with citrus pulp. This straightforward process involves covering the pulp over the silage clamp in a layer at least 12 inches thick. Pressing down with a bucket consolidates the pulp and makes sure there are no gaps. This is a sustainable way of creating an airtight seal on your silage pit without the use of plastic sheets. As an additional benefit, the citrus co-product adds nutritional value to the silage in the form of sugar and digestible fibre. Happily, its scent also acts as a pest repellent to keep vermin out of the clamp.
