Getting from A to B – Our sustainable transport strategy
As a co-product feed business, sustainability is central to our philosophy here at Duynie. We strive to make resources work as hard as possible throughout our operation, and transportation is no exception.
Moving the right product to the right location at the right time is a crucial part of what we do at Duynie. Co-product raw materials must be collected from suppliers when they’re in prime condition and farmers rely on our timely feed deliveries to keep their systems running smoothly. With pick-ups and drop-offs happening all over the country, seven days a week, the logistics of co-product livestock feeds are a round-the-clock job.
Every day, we stay in contact with our suppliers, receiving updates on production plans and confirming stock levels for all products. The procurement team reports availability across the business, letting the sales planners confirm orders with our customers. When we know what needs to go where, collection and delivery is arranged, either using Duynie vehicles or those of our haulage partners.
Economical driving
Smart telematics systems are installed in all Duynie vehicles, so we can track their efficiency. To let us calculate our CO2 emissions, data is gathered on speed, engine idle time and use of PTO (the ‘power take off’ which transfers the engine’s mechanical power to other equipment). Having such detailed information helps our experienced drivers understand how their individual driving styles influence the efficiency of their truck. They can then make changes – from better use of cruise control to limiting engine running time during loading and unloading – to be more economical with fuel.
With constant improvements in technology advancements, we aim to replace our trucks every three years, rather than every seven years, which was our previous strategy. Taking this approach means we always run at the highest efficiency possible.

Looking to the future
Our newer trucks operate at an average of 8.3 miles per gallon and that is something we are constantly striving to improve by taking advantage of innovations and making changes to driving practices.
Being smart with the way we plan our logistics also helps us improve the sustainability of our transport operation. By reducing the number of miles, we travel, we can appreciably cut our fuel use and emissions. To do this, we base our fleet of trucks as close as possible to supplier sites. The next step is focussing on delivering feeds to customers within a 60-mile radius of their source, to ensure the fuel burden of our products is minimal.
At Duynie, our transport team constantly has an eye on the future, seeking ways to be more sustainable. But, of course, they never forget our other priority – to always deliver the very best service to our customers.
