Sedagold Syrup Case Study 

Situated near Bedale in North Yorkshire, Richard &amp; Helen Grainger’s farm is about as close to the heart of the UK as you can get. With the Yorkshire Dales National Park on one side and the North York Moors National Park on the other, this is classic north-of-England farming country.

Case Study - The Secret to Top-Quality Beef

The farm comprises of owned and rented land that has been worked by the family since 1919. It’s a modern concern, with a large central yard enclosed by sheds around three sides. On the fourth side, there’s an outside clamp where wet feeds are stored, alongside a shed that holds bays for feed.
The farming system
While the farm focusses on finishing beef animals, it also runs a group of spring calving sucklers. Bearing in mind the aims of having finishers on the farm for 100 to 120 days and hitting daily live weight gains of 1.8kg, feed quality is a vitally important consideration for Richard and Helen.
It’s a busy farm, with 150 sucklers and around 850 finishers on the ground at any one time. Total annual throughput is approximately 2000 head. The suckler herd is served by Angus and Limousin bulls.
Thanks to the farm’s central location, both the English and Scottish markets are accessible. This allows finished animals to be sold weekly live weight at Northallerton livestock market, as well as dead weight to several processers across the country. As with many other farming enterprises, margins have been squeezed by higher costs of bought in cattle and feed, a challenge that persists into 2022

Formulating an effective ration
Having experienced ongoing difficulties at the time with continuity of supply, the Grainger’s turned to Duynie in looking for a feed supplier that could provide cost-effective product and service reliably, in order to better support the stability of their herd performance.
For the last two years, the herd’s ration has included a number of Duynie products, including cooked and raw chips, brewers’ grains, Vitagold and Sedagold syrup. The primary benefits of incorporating Sedagold were: it’s a reliable source of protein, delivers rapidly fermentable carbs and also binds the ration together, making it more palatable. Pleasingly for Richard and Helen the transition from the old ration to the new one went smoothly, with the cattle keen to maintain high intakes.
The Sedagold is conveniently stored in a pair of silos prior to being combined with the Duynie coproducts, as well as straw, maize grain, barley, palm kernel and sugar-beet pulp. The resulting bespoke ration is then mixed in a stationary feed wagon before being bucketed into square feeders.

Impressive results
The inclusion of Sedagold and other coproducts in the herd’s ration has seen a clear improvement. Uptake is enthusiastic, thanks to the consistency and palatability of the ration, whilst the quality of nutrition is distinctly reflected in the performance of the herd. Indeed, should Sedagold be left out of the ration for any reason, a marked decline can be observed in the performance of the animals.
Committing to a ration that’s supported by the co-products and expertise provided by Duynie, the Graingers’ farm continues its success in meeting its targets of 1.8kg DLWGs and finishing in 100-120 days.
