Understanding BSG
Brewers' Spent Grain is the solid residue left after the mashing process in beer production. Yearly over 36 million tonnes of BSG is created, accounting for over 80% of the entire waste generated during beer brewing. Traditionally, BSG has been primarily served as feedstock for biogas production, fertiliser and cattle feed. The low shelf life of the moist BSG make it a challenge to use in other applications. Though in recent years investments have been made to further valorise BSG. BSG is composed of mostly fibre (70%) and proteins (20%). Additionally, it contains various nutritional compounds (vitamins, minerals and polyphenols). These contents make it a promising resource for human consumption.

Introducing DuyGrain®
Duynie has developed a patented separation process that breaks down BSG into its component parts. These are then repurposed for various applications. The protein component we call DuyGrain®. It’s a protein concentrate refined from BSG until the concentration is over 50%. This is significantly higher than the co-product BSG, making the applications for DuyGrain® differ.
Another difference between BSG and DuyGrain® is that the quality of BSG can differ a lot. DuyGrain® is of a more consistent quality. This is because of the stable refining process and the fact that Duynie has partnered with one of the world’s largest breweries that allow us to preselect batches. As a result, DuyGrain® is suitable for products with a need for consistent quality. Think of specific recipes for human or pet food.
Applications for DuyGrain®
Nowadays alternative proteins are in high demand because proteins from meat and dairy products have a high environmental impact. Using DuyGrain® in meat or meat alternatives can significantly lower that impact. But there are more benefits to this upcycled ingredient other than low environmental impact. Because of the high protein content while also containing fibres and healthy unsaturated fats it can improve the nutri-scores of bakery products for example.
