1. Machine breakdown: prevention is better than cure

Perhaps the most obvious cause of bad performance is machine maintenance. When a machine is not maintained on time, it leads to bad performance. Maintenance ensures that everything keeps running smoothly and you don't have unforeseen costs due to collateral damage. For example, if the rollers are not replaced on time, the paper will go through the machine jerkily causing an easy tear in the paper which in turn leads to rejection of the final product. Or worse it can result in downtime because the paper must be rewoven as well. Even a burr on a knife can lead to minor damage at paper bags. And of course, a sharp knife cuts better than a blunted knife. Performing maintenance on time prevents machine breaktime and thus means more uptime.

2. High quality paper

When optimizing production efficiency, not only is it important to produce as quickly as possible with as little waste as possible, but also the associated costs. To produce paper bags at the lowest possible cost, we continue look at where savings can be made. However, cutting back on paper quality has a major impact on performance and is sometimes even a limiting factor of speed. The layers of the paper are so thin that small damages occur very quickly. This in turn leads to web breakage which often causes the machine to stop. The paper must be woven into the machine all over again, which costs time and thus efficiency. This is easily solved by using thicker paper or running the machine more slowly.

3. Encourage collaboration and learning from each other

For optimal performance of the glue and the machine, it is important to learn from each other. Often, adjusting the machines and the correct composition of the adhesive also involves a piece of operator’s feeling. Therefore, ensure adequate staffing on the production line so that there is room to swap and learn from each other. This ensures continued operation at maximum power even during illness or vacation. The less experienced operators can thus gain advantages of the knowledge of the experienced operators. By handling down the tips and tricks from man to man, you ensure less downtime and rejection because everyone knows the important points to watch out for and can load the machine correctly. Consider the correct location of the prints on the paper sacks and applying the adhesive in the right place.

4. Use the right adhesive

If the composition of the adhesive is not exactly right, it will lead to problems. With too little glue, it will not stick. With too much glue, it will not dry fast enough, or it will splatter. This leads to the glue staining the machine, causing it to have to be stopped for cleaning. Or because glue gets on the paper bags where it shouldn't, a lot of rejection occurs. This results in unnecessary costs. With the right viscosity you can avoid this and have more room to deviate from the standard. Everything must be properly adjusted to each other. Glue from modified starch dries quickly, but the effect comes later. Where the operator thinks it won't stick and adjusts the machine with more glue, you must think the other way around and use less glue, so it dries faster. Duynie has a lot of experience in what glue should be best used for paper bags and gives on-site advice, based on what they see and feel. In the article about the best biodegradable paper sack adhesives you find some important advantages on performance.

5. Rejection due to improper settings or alignment

Rejection is one of the biggest points which stands in the way of efficiency. To minimize rejection, the alignment and settings of the machine are very important. Everything must be right. If the glue does not run in the right place, it will foul the machine and/or the paper bags. As a result, you must throw away a lot, which is a waste. This leads to material and glue costs, but also takes time because everything must be cleaned. If the paper bags or sacks are cut wrong or the bottom is glued crooked, then they cannot be used and must be thrown away. And when the paper is not lying properly, so the print is not in the right location, this leads to mis production. It is also important that you use the right amount of glue and that has a short setting time, so that when you stack the paper bags, they don’t stick together.
