<p><em>If there’s one thing we take particularly seriously here at Duynie, it’s quality. So – perhaps unsurprisingly – we have a manager dedicated to keeping everything up to the highest standard. From keeping our customers happy to making sure we always follow best practice, Leisa Marris certainly has her work cut out.</em></p>

<h3><strong>So, tell us, what does a Quality Manager at Duynie do?</strong></h3>
<p>Since joining the company in 2018 as QM for the UK and Poland, I’ve been working to promote and develop Duynie’s quality systems. To make sure we meet customer expectation and comply with legal requirements, there are lots of policies, standards and procedures to stay on top of. We’re proud that we don’t cut any corners and I’m continuously driving and facilitating improvement.</p>
<h3><strong>What is it about your job that makes you tick?</strong></h3>
<p>I enjoy that the role is diverse and I get to be self-starting. Collaborating with suppliers and colleagues in the UK, Poland and throughout Duynie is always enjoyable. We have a common goal: to constantly improve while maintaining feed safety and always meeting (or exceeding) the needs of our customers.</p>
<h3><strong>If you had to pick a favourite element of the role, what would it be?</strong></h3>
<p>As part of Duynie’s continued quality monitoring, I get to work on Vulnerability Assessment and Critical Control Points (VACCP) analysis. I love to research the supply chain map, considering quality, social responsibility and sustainability. I enjoy the fact that the co-product industry offers opportunities to make an environmental difference.</p>
<h3><strong>How did you come to be a Quality Manager?</strong></h3>
<p>There are lots of aspects to quality assurance and I'm generally a curious person who wants to know something about everything. That means researching and testing are activities that suit me well. I started out working in a sector of food production that produced feed as a co-product and I’ve been lucky enough to grow up with agriculture. First in arable and game, then on my husband’s family beef farm.</p>
<h3><strong>Every job comes with tough bits – what’s challenging about yours?</strong></h3>
<p>The toughest part of working in quality can be convincing people that I’m not a baddie who’s out to get them. I see quality as a supporting function. Yes, I sometimes highlight problems, but I’m mainly here to improve things and find solutions.</p>
<h3><strong>Time to show off now – tell us about some of the achievements you’re most proud of?</strong></h3>
<p>I was pleased to have initiated a project to convert a waste product into valuable feed. Assisting the supplier to make it work was really satisfying – mentoring new suppliers to become accredited is always gratifying. And it makes me very proud when Duynie pass the FEMAS (Feed Materials Assurance Scheme) and UFAS (Universal Feed Assurance Scheme) audits with complimentary comments.</p>
<p>To share best practices and constantly push for improvement, Duynie has a supportive and valuable Quality Working Group. I contribute by being the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) specialist.</p>
<h3><strong>When you take off your Quality Assurance hat, what do you do to relax?</strong></h3>
<p>I enjoy family time with my three daughters. We’re a creative bunch and like to get stuck into art, baking and crafts. Under non-lockdown circumstances, I love going to music gigs with my husband, so am looking forward to getting back to that.</p>
<p>Although I originally started off in the food industry with food and cereal science, I’m actually a geologist, having gained a 1st class in Geological Physics a couple of years ago. Most beach holidays I drag my family around looking at fossils and rocks!</p>
