And when looking to establish ourselves in a new area, understanding the lie of the land is essential. Padraig Walsh is our man in Ireland, and he’s working hard to spread the word about co-product feeds to a whole new market.

Padraig Walsh - Meet the Team

So, Padraig, tell us a bit about your role…
I started as Duynie’s Area Sales Manager for Ireland in November 2020. Managing the Irish part of the company, I negotiate sales while building the customer base on the island of Ireland. Starting a new job and establishing a business is daunting at the best of times – to do it during a global pandemic has been even more challenging. But the team at Duynie has been really helpful with anything I’ve needed.
People might think co-product feed is quite a niche area, how did you end up at Duynie?
I’ve worked in agriculture all my life. I grew up on a arable and beef farm in Wexford and most recently I was with an animal feed manufacturer producing feed for the agri, pet and equine sectors.
My interest in the job I have today goes way back. I’ve always been enthusiastic about different methods of improving sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. When I met with the guys in Duynie, it was clear that they thought the same way.
What is it about sales that interests you?
I enjoy dealing with people directly and it’s fascinating trying to help them find ways to improve their businesses.
Getting Duynie established in Ireland sounds like a challenge – what’s involved?
My main focus right now is getting the Duynie name out to the public, as well as building a customer base and cementing supplier relationships. It’s a big task, but one that I’m very much enjoying – no two days have been the same. There have been lots of challenges, but I’ve been able to rely on my Duynie colleagues for support.
What’s your favourite bit of the job?
It’s definitely meeting new customers and working with them to formulate a sustainable ration that works for their livestock. 
Ireland’s a blank canvas for Duynie – how do you go about finding new contacts and converting them into new customers?
Word of mouth has been the main way of attracting new customers. When a client sees our products and the service we offer, they recommended us to other farming friends and neighbours. Cold calling into farms and showing them what we can provide has also been a great help in finding new contacts.
How are Irish farmers taking to the idea of co-product feed solutions?
Co-products have always been available in Ireland but the perception of them is very different to other countries. Most farmers are unaware of just how versatile and successful co-products can be when they’re used correctly.
These are tricky times for farming in Ireland, how are farmers coping?
Things have become increasingly difficult in recent years due to price volatility and adverse weather conditions. However, these are resilient and determined people who have a track record of dealing with everything that’s thrown at them.
When you have a free moment, what do you get up to?
My hobbies include playing hurling and football for my local GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) club. I also enjoy relaxing with a round of golf.
